Barbara Comstock Supports Transvaginal Ultrasound Requirement

While in the Virginia House of Delegates, Barbara Comstock supported several bills that are remarkably offensive to the interests of women. First, Comstock voted in favor of  legislation to limit the funding of badly needed women’s health clinics (HB 30), followed by HB 924 to shut many of them down altogether.

Then came HB 462, a bill so distasteful that it received national attention, and was even featured in the poignant Daily Show clip below. Already women considering an abortion in Virginia were required to undergo an ultrasound and wait 24 hours before they were eligible for the procedure.  This legislation changed the ultrasound requirement so that the ultrasound had to be transvaginal (where a wand is inserted into the vagina) as opposed to transabdominal (the normal kind).

The same bill also sought to outlaw several common methods of birth control, including the pill and IUDs.

It’s hard not to see such a change (requiring the ultrasound be transvaginal) as being designed to shame women, a move experts are calling “horrendously offensive and disgusting.”
